athenaeum

Location: London
Client: Ralph Trustees Ltd
Main Contractor: Structura

The basic contract required removal of 164 existing windows, to alter the structural openings to suit the new window/door design and install high performance doors, windows, fixed glazing and Juliet balconies. The system used was Schüco's AWS 75BS.HI using high performance double glazed units with acoustic ratings and solar control. The Schuco system used on this project was specifically sanctioned for this job as the windows and doors were what’s known as oversize from their standard permissible sizes.

The system fabricated and installed is what’s known as a hidden vent system, a window which has the same sight lines for a fixed light or an opening unit. The glazing has a super solar control coating to it to prevent heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter. On the 10th floor Crown designed and provided large sliding doors leading onto a steel / timber walk on balcony complete with balustrading so visitors can enjoy the stunning views over looking the gardens to Buckingham Palace and view along Piccadilly.

Contract value is approximately £1.7m but at the same time the hotel was completely refurbished in all rooms costing a great deal more than the external envelope refurbishment.
